Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrowmore West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrowmore West holds two earth forts, one beside the other on a low grassy hill, suggesting a small clustered settlement rather than a lonely outlier. The main ring measures thirty-one metres north to south and twenty-seven and a half metres east to west, with double banks and a hidden ditch that have resisted centuries of ploughing and forgetting. Its southeast gap may be an entrance, or it may be where the land simply gave up holding the shape. Either way, the fort still stands as a boundary drawn in soil, waiting for someone to remember what it excluded.
On a low hill in grassland. Subcircular ringfort (N-S 31m, E-W 27.5m), in fair condition, defined by two banks of earth and stone and an intervening fosse. No visible surface trace of the fosse and outer bank survive from NE through S to SW. Gap at SSE could be original. A ringfort (GA099-050----) lies c. 150m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
