Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrowmoneen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No wall, ditch or gate remains in Carrowmoneen. A house sits where the ringfort stood, its rooms and gardens built upon the buried shape of an older residence. The fort has not vanished so much as been absorbed, its boundary forgotten by people but perhaps still remembered in the ground beneath the floors.
In grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1930) as a roughly circular enclosure (D c. 30m). No visible surface trace survives. A house occupies the site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
