Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigcleena Beg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrigcleena Beg held a thirty-one-yard earthen ring on P. O'Sullivan's land before human hands levelled it into ordinary soil. A small portion of that ancient rampart still hides inside a boundary fence, waiting for someone sharp-eyed to find the buried line. The fairies may have taken the rest back, leaving behind only a forgotten shape in the ground.
Recorded by Bowman (1934, 600) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 31yd) on P. O'Sullivan's land, with small portion of rampart remaining in boundary fence. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
