Ancestral builders cut a shallow ditch and raised a bank into a D shape, creating a small defensible home in Carrickrobin. They left a narrow gap for entry and a wider causeway for exit, forcing visitors to pass close enough for inspection. A round depression in the centre suggests a hut once stood there, perhaps sheltering a family through storms and long winters. The fairies may have taken the name later, but the shape and size point to human hands, human choices and a life lived inside a compact earth fortress.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 D-shaped scarped area (C 38.5m N-S) delimited by traces of a shallow fosse (Wth c. 2.5m) from W-N along the straight side of the 'D'. Entrance gap (Wth 1.5m) and causeway (Wth 3m) across fosse at W. Possible hut site (LH006-029002-) represented by shallow depression (diam. 4m) in centre of enclosure.
