Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrickmoyragh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Carrickmoyragh still stand as earthen rings in open pasture, not as forgotten myths but as shaped land. The circular bank, wide fosse and possible eastern gap suggest a place made for residence, defense or ritual memory. Whether people lived there, fled there or refused to bury it, the fort still holds its shape against grass and rain.
In level pasture. A raised circular area (diam. 30.5m) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.2-6.6m; H 1-1.4m), with a wide, deep, partially waterlogged external fosse (Wth 6-7.2m; D 0.15-1.4m) from WSW-E-SW. A break (Wth 2m) in the bank at E may mark the original entrance. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
