Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrickittle

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrickittle holds a faded ringfort where a circular platform still rises two inches above the field. O'Kelly measured its diameter at one hundred and fifty feet in 1944, though fences and ploughs had already bitten into its edges. The name Fairy fort suggests people once believed the circle belonged elsewhere, but the earth remembers hands that shaped it long before survey wheels rolled across the land.
Described by O'Kelly (1944, 16) as following; 'This monument is a circular platform surrounded by a fosse. The platform has been damaged by the building of a fence on the N. side. and the S. side has been partially levelled to facilitate tillage of the platform itself. The maximum height of the platform is 2" [0.05m] over the field level. Overall diameter 150' [45.7m]'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 09 August 2019

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
