What is recorded here
Carrickittle holds a broken ringfort beside eight barrows and a tumulus scattered across three marsh fields. A modern fence cut through the platforms, exposing half their earth while leaving the rest buried under grass. The road and sandpit mark the western edge of this forgotten complex, where human hands shaped the land before memory faded.
Platform-type earthwork which is one of 12 monuments forming an archaeological complex located in three fields and described by O'Kelly (1944, 17) as following; 'All these monuments are situated in a low-land marsh meadow, the entire complex covering three fields. In one field are 8 of the barrows and the two platforms. In the nearest corner of the next field to the east is the tumulus, and the 9th barrow is in the nearest corner of the next field to the north. The road lies immediately to the west of all these, and the sand-pit is just west of this. The platforms [LI033-029001-] have been partially destroyed in the making of a modern fence which cuts through the N.E. sides of both leaving only about half of each now visible. They are separated by a distance of 40' [12m]. The N.W. platform [LI033-029001-] was circular and does not seem to have had a fosse. The S.E. platform is rectangular and also without a fosse. It is. 3' [0.9m] high and now measures 72' [22m] by 61' [18.6m]'.
