Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrickfad

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human buildings, misnamed later. The real wonder is the hidden passage beneath the grass, built by people who understood that some rooms must not be seen.
Situated on top of a slight rise on a S-facing slope. Grass-covered oval platform (dims 28m E-W; 17m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 1.6m). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. Man-made underground passage (LE010-01002-) is inside the perimeter at W. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
