What is recorded here
Half-hidden in rough pasture on the ridge crest, the earthen bank still stands two metres high around a level oval, its causeway entrance and cattle-break intact after centuries of weather. The fairies may have built it in a single night, but the measurements suggest human hands shaped every curve. A man-made passage cuts through the eastern sector, hinting that the fort served more than display. Whoever lived here understood sightlines, defences and the quiet pride of making a small place endure.
In rough pasture, on the crest of a ridge. An oval area (21m E-W; 16.5m N-S) defined by an earthen bank and an external fosse. The bank (Wth 5.25m; int. H 1.45m; ext. H 2m) and fosse (Wth 2.8m; D 0.75m) are well defined and visible all around. There is a causeway entrance (Wth 4.2m) at NE and a cattle-break (Wth 2.75m) at SE. The interior is level and moderately covered with overgrowth. The rath is visible as a circular area in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, V 289-90). There is a Man-made underground passage (KE084-017001-) in the E sector. This is probably one of the two raths (see KE084-018----) recorded in this townland in the 1940s (SMCK).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
