Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cappadavock, ryehill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

You can still walk the outer edge of that Cappadavock ring because a later field wall leans against the ancient earth. Inside, two banks and a narrow ditch circle a space wide enough for a small household to breathe, while a stone-lined gap at the south marks the only clean entrance. The fort is not much bigger than a courtyard, yet it stands on a rise where grass still moves around it like water.
On a rise in undulating grassland. Circular rath (D 38.5m), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The outer bank survives from E to S and is overlain by a field wall. There is a stone-lined entrance gap (Wth 2m) at S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
