Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Bunlick, knockataggart: earthen ring on a hillock, 27 metres across, with a shallow outside ditch and part of the bank worn flat. People may have lived there, marked a boundary, or kept livestock inside the circle before the name changed. The fairies took the story later, as they do everywhere, turning a human house into a forbidden one.
On top of a hillock in pasture. Sub-circular area (27m N-S) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.6m) forming townland boundaries W->SE; levelled bank (H 0.2m) SE->W. Shallow external fosse (D c. 0.35m) to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
