Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Boherkill

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human, built by neighbours, altered by neighbours and remembered by everybody. Boherkill is not separate from that rule. The circle is flat now, but the land still records the shape.
On level tillage from which a gentle slope falls immediately to the NW. A field system (KD017-025002-) lies immediately to the S and W. Described in 1972 as a roughly circular ringfort (diam. c. 65m) defined by a rise or embankment, most noticeable along the N side (SMR file). The surrounding field boundaries, as shown on the latest ed. (1910) of the OS 6-inch map, have been removed and ploughing has completely denuded the monument. While its location can still be seen, indicated by a broad rise, its precise limits are difficult to make out. (CUCAP AHL094 (1963), AVR007 (1968)) See attached image of Google Earth photograph taken 28/06/2018 which shows cropmark of the enclosure based on information supplied by Anthony Murphy Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 10 June 2011
