Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Behagullane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Behagullane: a thirty-metre earthen ring on an east-facing slope in County Cork. It is the kind of place people once pointed to when someone disappeared, or when milk came back sour, or when a child refused to walk the field after dark. The bank is low now, partly fence, partly grass, but the circle remains clear enough to stop argument. That is why it is still named: not for glory, but for warning.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Circular area (29.8m N-S; 30m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.6m) SSW->N; stone-faced field fence N->SSW may incorporate original bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
