Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bawnmadrum

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a W-facing slope in undulating pastureland with a lot of natural outcrop. A denuded, circular enclosure (diam. 35m N-S; 36.1m E-W) delimited by a low, earthen bank (Wth 1.7m; int. H 0.3; ext. H 0.86m) and outer fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.4m) with a causewayed entrance (Wth 3.5m) at SE. A gap in the W sector appears to have been used by a tractor, as does another gap (Wth 1.6m) in the NE quadrant. The outer fosse is only evident at N and SE. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
