Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Baurnalicka

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Baurnalicka, County Limerick: a 40m earthen ring now half-swallowed by pasture, its bank reduced to a low ridge while a derelict cottage crouches outside the gap. The circle still reads across the grass, but much of the enclosure has been levelled away. Whatever lived there has been flattened into field and memory.
In level pasture. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been partially levelled. Now evident as circular area (39.5m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by partially levelled earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.3m) NW->SW, but no trace of enclosing element SW->NW. Field boundary, shown abutting enclosure at NW on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been removed. Dry-stone field wall clips arc of bank SSE->SW. Level interior under pasture with some limestone outcropping. Derelict cottage immediately outside enclosing bank at SW. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
