Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Barrahaurin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Barrahaurin held a twenty-two-metre earthen ring on a west-facing slope above the Dripsey River, joining three others in a neat line along the valley’s northeast edge. The 1842 survey marked its hachured boundary before pasture and plough erased the shallow ditch. It may have been a household, a watch post, or a boundary marker for river traffic, but the earth has taken back the answer.
In pasture, on W-facing slope, overlooking Dripsey River. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 22m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. Along with three ringforts (8073; 8074; 8075), one of four enclosures in a line along NE side of Dripsey River valley. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
