Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Barnabrow

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No stone wall or broken gate remains, only a hidden circle beneath the grass. The fort vanished before human memory, yet it still holds its shape under the hill.
In pasture, atop hill. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m). No visible surface trace. Possible ringfort (CO077-027---) c. 130m to NE; levelled ringfort (CO077-029---) c. 120m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
