Fairy forts and human forts may share one shape, but they answer different instincts. The measurable part is a small earthen ring set into open ground; the interesting part is that people have kept calling such rings fairy places because they look like doors rather than houses. Banteer preserves both sides: a real boundary made of soil and stone, and a lingering belief that the boundary leads somewhere human reason does not follow.

In pasture, on SE side of Knockaun with land falling away from site to E and S. Circular area (37.5m N-S; 36.5m E-W) enclosed by earth and stone bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.75m) NW->SSE; elsewhere bank modified and incorporated into field fence system with stone walling added in parts and shallow internal fosse at base. Break in bank to N (Wth 2m) and NNW (Wth 0.7m). Interior surface uneven; slopes down to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
