Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballytrasna (barrymore By., Castlelyons Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballytrasna: a 42 m earthen circle on a SW-facing slope, with a 6 m gap to the NE and a ruined limekiln set into the SE bank. Cattle still walk the pasture around it, and the old line remains visible only because people keep clearing the growth. The gap does not point like a door so much as an invitation, as if the fort waited for someone to remember which way in.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 42m) enclosed by overgrown earthen bank (H 1.2m). Entrance (Wth 6m) to NE; ruined limekiln in bank to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
