Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyshoneen (muskerry East By., Inishcarra Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are no such thing. They are human places where the ordinary rule is that what is recordable is also visible, and what is visible can be measured. A missing chamber is not a hidden world. It is an unfinished account. The real wonder is that people still want to call gaps in evidence magical instead of completing the description.
In tillage. Circular area (diam. 47m) defined by earthen bank (H 1.8m) NNE->NW; levelled elsewhere. Bank incorporated into field fence system. Interior under tillage. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
