Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyshoneen (muskerry East By., Inishcarra Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Muskerry men called it a fairy fort because shadows moved inside the ring before storms, yet human hands built the one-metre bank and cut the shallow fosse around a thirty-seven-metre pasture circle. It is an earthen ringfort, not a fantasy trap, though wonder often enters places where memory has thinned. The field still holds its shape, waiting for footsteps, breath, or the kind of attention that makes dead things answer.
In pasture. Circular area (diam. 37m) defined by earthen bank (int. H 1m) with external fosse (D 0.5m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
