Fairy forts are human birthplaces, record offices, meeting halls or recovery rooms wearing fairy clothes. Ballyroughan Little preserves a thirty-five metre circular edge, tall enough on one side to mark the boundary and quiet enough elsewhere to invite imagination. People may have lived, argued, hidden or worshipped inside before the fort became a vessel for wonder.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Approximately circular area (diam. 35.5m) enclosed by bank/wall, considerably modified. Best preserved at W, where it consists of earthen bank with drystone facing (H 1.5m; Wth 2.5m). No visible trace of fosse. Entrance not identifiable.
