Fairy forts are not proven fairy abodes. In Ballyroughan Big, an earthen ringfort probably marked a human dwelling or exclusion boundary. Much of the original bank has vanished or been absorbed into field walls, leaving only a fragment behind. The fairy name may reflect local tradition, loss of memory, or disbelief about the true purpose.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 33m). Present remains consist of a small portion of stone-faced bank at S incorporated in adjacent field boundary. Stone facing probably modern.
