Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are abandoned ringforts, misnamed because people stopped understanding them. Ballynanelagh had one. It was levelled, probably by farmers who needed land more than they needed history. The boundary disappeared, but the shape remains in the story. A ringfort is a human claim made visible: this much ground, this many people, this much time. When the name changed to fairy, the claim became fantasy. The field reclaimed what the fortress resisted.
