Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynakilla (barrymore By., Ballycurrany Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are abandoned human settlements, misnamed because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. In Ballynakilla, two such rings were levelled before 1917, erasing the last visible proof that ordinary people once lived there. The field reclaimed the boundary, but the forgetting did not end; it simply moved inside the story told about the place.
One of two ringforts in this townland which were levelled in Power's time (1917, 19). Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
