Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymichael

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human ringforts, misnamed because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. Ballymichael is one of them: a broken earthen circle on a farm slope, its banks lowered by ploughs and years. The fairies entered later, filling the gap left by forgotten people.
In tillage, on NE-facing slope. Circular area (38m N-S) defined by low rise to NW and NE; earthen bank E->SSE (int. H 2.5m); external fosse to SE (D 1.4m). Approx. 8m outside inner bank is second earthen bank (H 1.7m) surviving W->SSE. Outer bank heavily overgrown and incorporated into field fence system. Break (Wth 3.5m) in inner bank to N. Interior slopes gently down to NE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ballymichael, likely an early-medieval agricultural or defensive site, featuring a double bank and fosse system. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy dwellings, and they were often avoided due to beliefs in supernatural inhabitants.
