What is recorded here

Half the ringfort in Ballylarkin Lower still stands, a shallow D of earth and ditch beside Woodview House. The eastern half has been levelled away, leaving only the western curve to mark what the boundary line cut through. People may have lived inside that small oval, or perhaps they avoided it because fairy forts demand keeping their distance. Either way, the ditch and bank still hold the shape of a place half-swallowed by forgetting.

In the grounds of Woodview House. Only the W portion of the monument is depicted on the revised 1900 OS 6-inch map. The monument was transected by a townland boundary running NW-SE and the portion E of the boundary appears to have been levelled. The remaining roughly D-shaped area (int. dims. 22m NW-SE; 12m E-W) is enclosed by a slight bank and an external fosse from NW-W-S-SE. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 29 July 2019
