Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygoghlan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort and human ringfort both hide in the same shallow dish. The land keeps a circular memory seven metres wide, with ridges and dips that may have been walls, ditches, or the breath of a place before people gave it edges. What is missing is not nothing. The shape still turns the mind, and the mind completes what the soil has forgotten.
In undulating pasture, atop low hillock. Monument, depicted as circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1923 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. However, it is still apparent as circular hollow (D c. 0.2m; 14m N-S; 13m E-W) enclosed by low rise (max. H c. 0.2m; Wth c. 10m), c. 7m outside of which is concentric dip (Wth c. 3.5m; D c. 0.2m) NE->ESE. Immediately outside dip is another low rise (H c. 0.1m; Wth c. 10m). Elsewhere surrounding terrain slopes gradually away from site. Entire site under grass. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
