Fairy forts across Ireland mark places where human life and fairy belief overlapped. They are often old ringforts, field boundaries, burial mounds or abandoned homesteads that later became fairy ground in local memory. In Ballyduneen, the fort may have begun as a human dwelling or defensive place before becoming a forbidden fairy site in tradition.
