Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballycullane Upper

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballycullane Upper is a circular earthwork about twenty metres across, hidden beneath dense vegetation on an NE-facing slope in County Limerick. Its bank rises nearly two metres outside but only eighty centimetres inside, with a narrow gap at the northwest where a field boundary presses against the earth. The name suggests people once believed fairies lived there, while the shape and setting point to a human ringfort from the medieval period. Whatever it was, it has stood long enough to become half-forgetten, half-sacred, and covered in green like a secret kept by the land.
In undulating pasture, on NE-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 20m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.9m). Much of bank and all of interior are covered by dense overgrowth. Gap in bank at NW (Wth c. 1m). Field boundary, travelling on N-S axis, abuts bank at NE and SE. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
