Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballybroman

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible trace survives today, but a large circular enclosure still stands in memory south of the listed site. It appeared on maps drawn in the nineteenth century, suggesting people walked past or lived beside the ridge before it vanished from sight. Perhaps the earth slipped back into the field or hands removed the stones. The fort may have been a boundary marker, a shelter, or a warning not to take more than the land could give.
Situated in the next field immediately S of KE021-075----, this large circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 and 1898 OS maps. No visible trace survives today. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 725. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
