Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballybane (imokilly By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballybane, County Cork: a 35-metre earthen ring, two metres high, standing in tillage on level ground. Its bank was levelled for five metres to the south-south-east, perhaps for a gate, a path or a forgotten bargain. People may have lived inside, excluded others, or simply marked the edge of the known field. The flat land and solid bank still suggest a place set apart, even when its purpose has faded.
In tillage, on level ground. Roughly circular area (c. 35m NE-SW) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2m). Bank levelled to SSE for 5m. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
