Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballooly (eyre)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misnomers. Human hands built them, perhaps for a family, perhaps for a fortress. The fairies inherited later. They are tenant, not owner. The chamber belongs to the dead and the living who remember them.
In pastureland. Marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m). A NW-SE running field boundary overlies the enclosing element from N to E and a second field boundary, running NW-SE, overlies it from E to S. On inspection in June 1983 only the tree-planted curving field boundaries were evident from N to E to S. No visible surface trace survived from S through W to N. The interior of the site was overgrown with trees. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 17 July 2019
