Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballintubbrid

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy ever danced inside the Ballintubbrid fort. A human hand built the earthen ring, probably centuries before written records reached that pasture. People lived there, bred animals there and left the field empty. Forgetting turned the house into a fairy tale. The gap in the bank marks the moment human knowledge fled the place.
In level pasture. Circular area (18m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.85m) except NNW->E where enclosing element has been removed by construction of farm trackway. Interior, sloping down slightly to N, is covered by overgrowth. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
