Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinlassa

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on flat pasture with extensive views. A heavily overgrown site consisting of a raised circular platform (diam. 31m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3m; int. H 1m; ext. H 2-4m) with fosse (Wth 3m: D 0.7m) and external bank (Wth 4m; ext. H 0.1m) both of which are visible from SW to W only; elsewhere destroyed. No clear entrance feature visible. A small gap in the bank at W (Wth 1.5m) is probably a modern feature (Stout 1984, 33-5). The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
