Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ardrea

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ardrea is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ardrea, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies pasture on the south-facing slope of a drumlin, where a twenty-four-metre arc appears as a one-point-two-metre scarp and a shallow external fosse. The remaining earthwork disappears beneath the ground surface, though a 1944 survey marked the northeast-southeast rise with a single line.
In pasture, on the S-facing slope of a drumlin. An arc (C 24m) NE-SE of the rath, evident as a scarp (H 1.2m), and an external fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.4m) encloses the W corner of the field. The remainder of the rath is not visible at ground level. An arc NE-SE is indicated on the 1944 OS 6-inch map as a single line of hachures indicating a rise. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
