Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ardagh (orrery and Kilmore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortals build rings to keep out what they fear. Fairies build rings to keep in what they love. The distinction matters less than the shape. A circle drawn in earth is a promise made visible. Forgetting the promise does not break it. It only stops the celebration.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 23m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.3m) with external fosse (max. D 1.5m). Bank heavily overgrown; causewayed entrance (Wth. 2.2m) to E. Fosse partially infilled to N and NE; waterlogged to SE. Interior inaccessible due to overgrowth. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
