Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Arda Mór (tc Cinn Aird)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fantasy. They are human places from before written memory, built by ordinary people who are no longer named. Arda Mór is one of them: a shallow circle of earth on a Kerry hillside, partly forgotten but still whole in shape. The chamber is empty, the doors closed, the lights off. That is not death. It is patience. The woman is waiting for the boy to return, and the hill is holding her breath.
The outline of the circular univallate enclosure marked on the 1st edition of the OS map is now only faintly discernible. It has an estimated diameter of 28.5m. Located on a N facing slope on the S side of the Lispole valley. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 592. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
