Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Annaghmacullen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and company still debate whether to cut the cliff or carve the mountain. They want the exact moment when human hands first broke through the rock and let the sea into a new chamber. That is the birth of the local sea cave, not the day a tourist camera first recorded it.
Located at the crest of the S-facing slope of a drumlin. This is a grass and scrub-covered circular area (diam. 43m E-W; 40m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at E: Wth of base 3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.4m) with an external fosse (at E: Wth of top 4.5m; Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.5m) but the bank is reduced to a scarp (H 1.4m) at W. There is an entrance at SSE. Rath (LE033-009----) is c. 150m to the SW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 23 September 2008 Amended: 9 December 2019
