Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in An Carn Mór Thiar

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

An Carn Mór Thiar is a much-denuded circular earthen fort about forty metres across on a Galway ridge, now hidden beneath a later field wall except for a low bank from northwest to northeast. It may have stood as a defended home or marker of local authority before ploughs and stone walls erased most of its shape. The surviving curve suggests a ring fort rather than a fairy tale, yet the loss of its boundary blurs the line between human history and forgotten myth.
On the crest of a ridge in farmland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 112, no. 9) as a much-denuded circular ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 40m). Apart from a low bank which survives from NW to NE, no visible surface trace survives. The bank is overlain by a later field wall.
