What is recorded here
Half the circle survives beneath field walls and grazing stock, while the missing underground passage has vanished without a trace. The visible bank stands only knee-high, yet it marks a chambered hole dug into the earth where people once kept what they feared to lose. The fairies took the tunnel back, or time simply erased it, leaving behind a grassy cairn and a boundary drawn in stone.
Internal diam. c. 24m
The site of this univallate rath with Man-made underground passage was shown on the OS maps only as a small subrectangular field. However, the outline of the SW half of the rath, probably originally circular, is indicated partly by a curving field wall, and, along the W sector, by what is probably the original bank. The latter is 2m wide, 1.4m high externally and no more than .5m high internally. The N and E sides of the present enclosure are defined by straight field walls.
There is no visible trace of the Man-made underground passage KE053-073001- which lay near the S edge of the enclosure. It consisted of at least 1 chamber or passage and a creepway (local information). The only feature now visible in the interior is a grass-grown cairn of stones with a slight central depression. This measures 3.5m x 2.5m x a maximum of .6m in height.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 349. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
