What is recorded here
Half-buried under grass and forgotten by most, the rath still holds its shape on the slope above Lateevemore. A thin earthen bank, a shallow ditch in one place, gaps where stone walls now lean, and an unexplained hollow inside. It faces Dingle Harbour like a watchkeeper that stopped paying attention but never left.
Internal diam. 25.6m N-S, 23.6m E-W.
A roughly circular univallate rath situated on a gentle ESE facing slope on the E side of Lateevemore (1047 feet), with excellent views towards Dingle Harbour and the Iveragh Peninsula. The condition of the earthen enclosing bank and fosse varies considerably. The fosse is present only along the W sector where it is 1.5m wide and .4m deep below the external ground level. The bank is a maximum of 1m high internally and 1.6m high externally, but along the S sector the site is defined only by a very slight step up to the interior from the external ground level. There are gaps in the bank at NW and NE. These measure 2m and 2 to 3m in width respectively, and between them the bank acts as a low footing to an overlying modern stone wall. The bank along the E sector is densely overgrown but it appears to be stone revetted in places. This latter feature is not evident elsewhere where the bank is preserved. The only feature visible in the interior is an unexplained hollow in the SE sector.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 321. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
