What is recorded here

Half a ring of earth still stands in Aharney, its southern bank bruised by time but unbroken. The missing half has not vanished; it has surrendered to rain, plough and forgetfulness, leaving a hollow circle wide enough for a dozen people to walk inside. What the soil kept, the sky took back. What the sky took, memory refuses to release. Rathpatrick does not need completion. It knows the shape of the whole.

Only S portion of bank remaining. Described as a circular area (diam. c. 40m) defined by a bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H c. 0.5m-0.8m) with a fosse (Wth c. 4m, ext. D c. 0.6m) at E. Entrance at E (OPW file). Known as 'Rathpatrick' (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 309). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
