Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ahane Upper

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Quarrying destroyed the Ahane Upper ringfort, but Broker witnessed a man-made underground passage beneath Quarry Field in 1937. The site transformed from a circular home into a supply of stones, erasing the visible boundary while leaving its hidden shape intact.
In pasture. Depicted as hachured circular raised area (diam. c. 25m) on 1938 OS 6-inch map. Site removed by quarrying. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 297) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 39yd) on J. O'Keeffe's land. Broker (1937, 51) recorded levelled fort in 'Quarry Field', with Man-made underground passage (CO029-07802-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
