What is recorded here
Ahane Lower holds a broken double ring where human hands first shaped the earth. Its eastern gap still aligns with a causeway, while the southern mound reveals a forgotten lime kiln. The fairies may have inherited the fort after people stopped remembering it, but the measured banks and stone-faced entrance prove the human workshop beneath the mythology.
In pasture, on crest of low rise, c. 480m to NNW of River Blackwater. Circular area (c. 37m E-W; 35.8m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening fosse. Inner bank (ext. H 1.1m) survives as low rise internally; break to SSE (Wth 5.2m) and NNW (Wth 3.45m). Outer bank heavily overgrown and incorporated into field fence system; break to NNW. Causewayed entrance (Wth 2.6m) to E; remains of stone facing at base of bank on either side of entrance. Interior raised; crossed by remains of cultivation ridges; mound (H 2.2m; Wth at base c. 4m) on S bank is remains of lime kiln depicted on 1842 OS 6-inch map. On 1904 OS 6-inch map second bank shown as field boundary (solid line); second fosse SW->ENE and third bank NNW->ENE shown as hachures. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO038-154---) in interior.
