Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghnagollop

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mud and memory have swallowed the entrance, leaving only a shallow scar in the grass where a life once turned. The fort is small enough to walk across in a breath, yet it holds the shape of every person who ever stood inside it. Aghnagollop keeps its secrets in water and soil, not stone. What is missing has not stopped being present.
Situated in a fairly low-lying position with a small NE-SW stream just to the SE. This is a grass-covered circular area (diam. 20.2m E-W; 18.5m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.6m at N to 1.05m E-S) with some bushes. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
