Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghnaglogh (upper Loughtee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and I walked into Aghnaglogh at dusk. The fairy fort stood beside the upper Loughtee By., its earthen bank still tracing a circle wide enough for rooms, firelight and argument. We did not force the entrance or pretend to know who lived there. We sat outside, watched the water and left before dark. Some places must be met, not solved.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 25.6m) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and vague traces of a fosse. Wide break in bank at SSE presumably represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Aghnaglogh, likely dating to the early medieval period, is characterized by a raised circular area with a substantial enclosing bank and traces of a fosse. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folklore, often regarded as the dwellings of supernatural beings or portals to the Otherworld.
