A tall woman stood on the ridge above Aghamore, holding a rope and pointing at the circular scar in the grass. She said the fort was young, that it appeared after the last storm and would disappear before dawn. I wanted to measure it, but she warned that measurement anchored it in the world and prevented its departure. We sat beside the shallow ditch instead, watching the star field tilt and the bank fade like ink in rain.

On the N facing slope of a hill just below the summit with good views to the N, E and W with limited view to the S due to its location. Roughly circular area (diam 24.6m N-S ; 29m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank reduced to a scarp in most places with external fosse (D 1.3m; Wth 1m). Possible causewayed entrance (Wth 3m) at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).
