Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Aghadreenan — Report the wrong picture

A 35-metre earthen ring on a Monaghan drumlin has watched the ridge since before McCrea drew it in 1793. Its grassy floor and overgrown bank still hold the shape of a lived-in place, even though the entrance has vanished under soil and time. People may have stood inside that circle, marked territory, or simply followed the old line of the land. The fort remains visible enough to be known and hidden enough to resist explanation.

Located on the SE-facing spine of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 35m NNW-SSE; c. 32m ENE-WSW) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at SW: Wth of base c. 5m; int. H c. 1m; ext. H 2m) that is replaced by a field bank SE-S, and traces of an outer fosse or drain (at SW: Wth of top 3.6m; Wth of base 2.8m; ext. D 0.5m) S-NW. It is surrounded by and a road bank SW-WNW.
