In 2001, two shallow pits emerged beside a displaced standing stone in County Cork, holding dark soil scattered with charcoal and small stones. They may have marked a forgotten offering or a moment when someone set a vessel into the earth before leaving. The larger pit touched the hollow where the stone once stood, linking human memory to the monument itself.

Two pits were revealed during excavations undertaken in 2001 prior to the reinstatement of a displaced standing stone (CO093-033----). The smaller of the pits (diam. 0.15m; D 0.70m) was subcircular in plan and was cut through the redeposited boulder clay. The fill was a brown sandy silt containing occasional small charcoal flecks and pebbles. The larger pit (0.25m x 0.31m; D 0.16m) was situated c. 0.12m to the S and was roughly oval in plan with the N and E sides sloping gradually to an uneven base (Wth 0.11m). The fill was a loose, dark-brown to black, silty sediment containing occasional charcoal and pebbles. The pit cut into redeposited boulder clay and also into the N side of the backfilled socket for the standing stone. The excavation also uncovered a cremation pit (CO093-033001-).
